Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders’ Incentive Fund (KBIF)

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders’ Incentive Fund allows the breeder of record to win cash awards in races all over the USA, as well as throughout the world. The incentive fund encourages Thoroughbred horse owners and breeders to conduct business in Kentucky, benefiting the state’s economy and ensuring horse racing remains on of Kentucky’s renowned industries. To qualify for the award, a mare must be nominated for the program and remain in the Commonwealth from the time of breeding until the birth of the foal.  In 2019, The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission paid out $14.3 million to 1,443 Kentucky breeders through this program.

Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund

This unique program benefits owners and their Kentucky-sired, Kentucky-foaled runners. Its aim is to upgrade the overall quality of racing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is an incentive program to encourage owners to buy from Kentucky markets, to board and breed mares on Kentucky farms, and to race them on Kentucky tracks.  All horses of racing age that are both Kentucky-bred and sired by a Kentucky stallion which stood in Kentucky the entire breeding season the year the horse was conceived are eligible to be registered. The Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund adds more than $20 million more in purse money to run for in designated stakes, handicap, allowance, non-claiming maiden races, and allowance optional claiming races with a claiming price of not less than $25,000 contested at Thoroughbred racetracks in Kentucky. For horses registered and eligible, fund monies are divided as follows: 60% to the winner, 20% to second, 10% to third, 5% to fourth, 3% to fifth, and the remaining 2% divided evenly among starters.

Breeder Awards are paid to the breeders of Florida-breds lawfully registered with the FTBOA that finish in first, second, or third place in a pari-mutuel race at Florida thoroughbred tracks during the calendar year as follows:

Percentages:

  1. First: 10% of the announced gross purse, less any Florida Owner Awards included therein with each such breeder award limited to no more than $10,500.
  2. Second: 3% of the announced gross purse, less any Florida Owner Awards included therein with each such breeder award limited to no more than $3,000.
  3. Third: 2% of the announced gross purse, less any Florida Owner Awards included therein with each such breeder award limited to no more than $1,500.

Florida Owner Awards:

Florida Owner Awards are paid by the individual Florida tracks to the owner of a FTBOA registered Florida-bred winner of certain races. The payments for the Florida Owner Awards are based on a percentage of gross purses at Gulfstream Park West, Gulfstream Park, and Tampa Bay Downs.

NOTE: the above represents a typical schedule of Florida-bred and –sired races and may vary from year to year.

NOTE: Mare residency – Florida has no residency requirement for mares. A Florida-bred simply is a foal dropped in Florida regardless of the length of time the mare has been in the state (and the foal is registered with the FTBOA)
