Retirement & Aftercare
“A good man will take care of his horses and dogs not only while they are young but when they are old and past service.”
– Plutarch, 100 A. D.
At Thoroughbred Racing Nation, we know that breeding and racing horses is much more than just winning races. Most of our horses have been bred and raised by us and therefore will always have a special place in our hearts as part of our family. These horses work hard for us, so it’s important to us to make sure they have comfortable and wonderful lives once they retire.
Our horses are always treated with respect and with compassion. Each horse has its own personality, and they will let us know when they are not interested in racing anymore. We never push them further than they want to go, and we do our best to try and retire our horses before they have a serious injury so they can be assured of a second career that they will enjoy. This is why we begin the planning process earlier in their career where we can assess what type of career they will do well in after they are finished working as racehorses.
We also add a sticker/message to the papers of all horses we have bred or raced that lists our contact information just in case the horse ends up in a situation without good options for his/her future. Also, when we donate or sell one of our horses to another person, we make sure that the horse’s paperwork notes that ownership of the horse is being transferred with the understanding that the horse will NOT be raced or sold at auction in the future.
We continue to do our best to place our retired horses in loving and caring environments.
This is the Green Knight, one of our retirees who has gone on to enjoy a second career as an event horse. The Green Knight won a division of the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, the largest Thoroughbred retraining competition in the world for recently-retired ex-racehorses.
Living the Dream!
Joining a partnership at Thoroughbred Racing Nation offers our partners the experience, the thrills, and the benefits of ownership at a fraction of the cost. Rather than one person purchasing one horse, multiple partners can purchase a percentage of one or more horses – spreading the financial risks and expenses, as well as the rewards, among all the partners.
At Thoroughbred Racing Nation, we are passionate about racehorses, horse racing, and success! Whether you own 1%, 10%, 50%, or 100% of one of our racehorses, you are an owner, and this means you receive all the benefits and perks awarded to racehorse owners of every level of ownership
